- Open the Label Templates form using the toolbar item or menu on the Labels form.

- On the Label Templates form click New Label Template File.
- This will create a new Microsoft Word document based on the Label Template.dot file.
- You can change the label sizes by using the Start Mail Merge tool.

- Choose Label as the merge type.
- On the Label Options dialog choose the appropriate label size that you need. When you click ok Word will indicate that it has to remove the current contents of the document. Click Ok.
- You will now see a grid on the document representing the blank labels. To add the data fields that will come from Advantage, click on the Insert Merge Field tool.

- Choose each field that you would like to appear on the label and use the various formatting tools in Word to get the first label in the grid looking the way you want.
Each of the fields that you place onto the label will be replaced with real data from the project when the labels are generated in Advantage using this template. To improve the usefulness of the label you may wish to add text indicating what the data is. For example you would add the text 'Opening:' in front of the filed <<OPENING>> so that readers of the label know what the number on the label represents. Additionally, you can format the label using Word to make it look however you want including graphics like a company logo, and various font styles and/or colors.
To duplicate the layout of the first label to the remaining labels, click the Update Labels tool

- Your document will now look something like this:

- Save your document to the Common folder in Common\Templates\Labels\. If using Word 2007, be sure to save the document in the Word 97-2003 format. The label engine in Advantage is not currently compatible with Word 2007 template files.
- Close the Word document.
- In the Label Templates dialog in Advantage type a descriptive name for your new label template.
- To select your new template file click the ellipse button next to the File Name column. Select your newly created template file.

- Click OK on the Label Templates dialog. Your newly created template will be selected in the Labels form.
- You can now use this template to create labels for your projects.
For Word 2003, the operation is basically the same the but the toolbars appear different.
